Nathan Myhrvold: “I Am Interested in Lots of Things, and That’s Actually a Bad Strategy.” Myhrvold has an incredible background — he graduated high school at 14, earned multiple graduate degrees and was a research assistant with Stephen Hawking at 23, and then became the first Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft without having studied computer science. Mauboussin is the Head of Consilient Research at Counterpoint Global (part of Morgan Stanley) and recently released a paper about how to value intangible assets. He covers it from all angles, including the increase of intangible assets for most firms over time, why traditional accounting rules haven’t caught up with this shift, and how public market investors have accounted for this on their own. He also touches on the impact CapEx related to intangibles has on the income statement, which is unlike CapEx spent on traditional PP&E, and why the value of intangibles isn’t realized until M&A occurs in most occasions.
