Today we have episodes on why income sharing agreements may be the answer to the student-debt problem, why online dating and fintech are both having huge impacts on the economy.

Business

  • a16z Podcast: Are ISAs the Solution to Student Debt? Student debt is now at $1.5T and is weighing on the younger generation. One of the potential solutions is an income sharing agreement, where you go to school for free and pay back a certain percentage for a couple years after graduating, only if you get a job afterwards and earn a high enough salary. Austen Allred, the CEO and cofounder of Lambda School, thinks it’s the future of education and joins the episode to explain why. ISA’s do a great job of aligning incentives between schools and students to train them and assist them in obtaining employment after graduation. The idea is also being applied to other fields and you can listen to an episode on ISA’s for minor league baseball players here.[December 18, 2019–27 minutesiTunes Podcast | Spotify | Overcast |Breaker | Website Link

  • Invest Like The Best: Ben Savage — All Things Fintech Investing. Savage has a wealth of knowledge on fintech investing, currently working as a Partner at Clockwise Ventures. He emphasizes the impact that technology is having on both lowering transaction costs and unlocking value in asset classes that didn’t previously exist (like vintage cars and art). He also expects more firms to extend current trends and overtake incumbents (like Robinhood starting with $0 trading costs from day 1). He also thinks fintech will make private markets even more important going forward. [December 17, 2019–1 hour, 5 minutesiTunes Podcast | Spotify | Overcast |Breaker | Website Link

  • Odd Lots: How Online Dating Is Reshaping the Entire Economy. This was a fun episode on how dating has changed —while you used to only meet people in your local community, online dating has now provided access to people all over the world. The trend is having a huge impact on variables within the economy, household formation, and e-commerce. Dan McMurtrie, a hedge fund manager, joinds the episode to discuss how different apps work and why he expects them to continue to become more niche, the power shift from males to females in the dating world, and the impact of the smart phone on this trend. As online dating continues to grow, the ability to understand the impact of these trends will become more and more important. McMurtrie has also written a paper on the topic, which you can read here. The Rest

  • The Learning Leader Show: 343: Kelly McGonigal — The Power Of Discipline, Movement, & Stress. McGonigal is a health psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University specializing in understanding the mind-body connection. The episode is broken into three parts based on her three books: The Willpower Instinct (the first 21 minutes), The Upside of Stress, and The Joy of Movement (starting at 44:30). The first part explains how we can harness willpower to make our lives more productive. The part about stress was the most impactful for me — she explains that we need to view stress in a positive way and realize it helps us become more focused, energized, and prepared for whatever we are about to experience. The last segment explains why physical exercise is a powerful antidote to the loneliness, anxiety, and depression that so many people experience.
